Brian is correct, the answer is 20: 9,19,29,39,49,59,69,79,89,90,91,92,93,94,95,96,97,98,99(99's 1st digit),99(99's 2nd digit).
If 9 is the same as 6 then you will need 40 :) ...call it Long Street.
You need just one 9 to use it for all of your numbers .
i'm not sure about the name but maybe Puzzlaria
Call the Street "New Century" ;-)
19 "9" letters are required (in case they are not painted, like on the curb): 09, 19, .., 99 + 90, 91, .. 98.

while trying hard to not count same letters twice, I missed out on "99"'s second digit...

Jurgen - that's 20 (not 19) 9s. 99 has 2 9s.
Maybe it's one of those trick question, where zero is the right answer.

The correct answer is usually posted by the guy setting the puzzle, up to about a week later, unless some clever-clogs gets the answer very quickly.
The second post was verifying that Brian got the answer correct.

20 nines will be required to number all the houses. The street might be called "9th street" because of all the 9's.
