the first letters of the words representing the numbers are:
"F" - four
"O" - one
?
"T" - three
"S" - seven
if the missing number is 9, then the first letters spell "FONTS"

Folliwing Zaux's argument, it could be 1 => FOOTS (as in foots the bill).

my ignorance has surfaced again ... I also thought "foots" and then discarded the idea because I was sure someone would inform me that most people use "feet" :) ... it did not immediately excite my brain to think it could be a verb as you stated in "foots the bill" :)
