The Goat Eats

There is a fenced in area of grass which is 40' x 40'. There is a vertical metal pole mounted securely, in the ground, in the center of the fenced in area. A goat is placed inside the fence with a 20' rope tied to the collar around its neck.

How much grass can the goat eat?

One end of the rope is tied to the goats collar. Is the other end tied to the fence or to the metal pole or not at all? If not at all 40*40 = 1600 sq ft. If to the pole 20^2(pi)= 4000(pi) If to the fence it depends on where on the fence it is tied.

make that 400(pi) for the circle. That is of course assuming that you don't count the grass growing back.

you guys are too good ... the goat can dine on 1600 sq. ft. of grass because, as you guys so eloquently stated, the other end of the rope is not secured.

The pole is in the centre. The fence offers no constraint, so the goat can eat pi*20^2 = 1256.64 approx square feet.

That's 78.54% approx of the whole field.

Due to the unusual phrasing of the question, "How much grass can be goat eat?", rather than "How much grass can THE goat eat", we must assume the possibility that other goats are around, and possibly outside the fence. Hence no answer can be given.

Hi Vago. Zaux has only just started posting trick one's. So he got me off guard. Even so, I bet I'll fall for more. I often mess up non-trick ones, though.

Zaux, thanks for the compliment, but I think it is undeserved.
