Good answer Chris ... silence seems to fulfill the criteria of the poem, but it is not the unknown we are seeking... :-)

Maybe "heaven's sake" is a clue.
If it can be short, and long, why bother with that clue? Maybe that means it has length. Most things with length have weight and can be seen. So I think it must not have length. Short and long mean something else.
