The Elusive Riddle

It can be short.
It can be long.
If you think it has weight,
You are definitely wrong!

It can't be heard.
It can be seen.
For heaven's sake,
What do I mean?

What is it?

Good answer Chris ... silence seems to fulfill the criteria of the poem, but it is not the unknown we are seeking... :-)

Hi Ragknot ..
good answer, but not the one we seek

I see that, now that I read all the above.

No weight? does it have mass?

Maybe "heaven's sake" is a clue.

If it can be short, and long, why bother with that clue? Maybe that means it has length. Most things with length have weight and can be seen. So I think it must not have length. Short and long mean something else.

Is it "time"?

Ha, Ha, I got a one track mind.

I had considered electro-waves, but considered light, and you can see light. I think time is a better answer.

guys ... I'm sorry ... made an error. I corrected it , but it caused a lot of unnecessary posts. The unknown we seek CAN be seen.

In case it's not clear, Zaux said the intended answer is :
A shadow.

Other solutions work nicely.
I would have answered a rainbow.

Hmmm!. Provided there are no obstructions, all rainbows have the same (angular) size.
