Answer the phone ...

Cam tried to phone his wife all afternoon ... but she never answered. When he finally arrived home, she was gone, but this message was on the table:

←936←8 _←8→6 _28→9 _←2 _63←9 _←74→663

Cam looked at the code and said to himself, "Jeez, no wonder she didn't answer".

What did the message say?

The arrows must mean something.

Got it, Matt Stephens was on the right track and led me to the answer....

"Went to buy a new phone"

The numbers represent the digits on a mobile keypad, it's a text message.

The arrows indicate the left or right letter on the key, if there is no number then it's the middle letter.

Sorry that should be "if there is no arrow then it's the middle letter"
