Mixed Up Titles
This information is the titles of the first four place winners in the Unusual Book Title Competition. The titles got mixed up and only one word in each column is in the correct position.
PLACE -- 1st WORD ----- 2nd WORD ----- 3rd WORD ----- 4th WORD
-- 1 ------- Killing ---------- Puddings -------- Laughing ------- Stupidly
-- 2 ------ Making --------- Sharks ----------- Jumping -------- Loudly
-- 3 ------ Hitting ---------- Cakes ------------ Running -------- Cruelly
-- 4 ------ Shooting ------- Flies -------------- Hopping -------- Quickly
The following will help you arrange the words in the book titles correctly:
1. Jumping is not adjacent to Running
2. Sharks is one place below Loudly
3. Killing is one place above Quickly
4. Sharks is not in the same title as Running
5. Making is one place below Jumping.
6. Cakes is one place above Running
Correctly sort the words in each unusal book title and it's place in the competition.

Mixed up Titles
Given:
1. Jumping is not adjacent to Running
2. Sharks is one place below Loudly
3. Killing is one place above Quickly
4. Sharks is not in the same title as Running
5. Making is one place below Jumping.
6. Cakes is one place above Running
Only 1 correct per column
Assume words must remain in the same column.
Represent statements 2,3,5,6 graphically
Statement 2: Sharks is one place below Loudly
0001
0100
First row is A. A=1,2,3
Statement 3: Killing is one place above Quickly
1000
0001
First row is B. B=1,2,3
Statement 5: Making is one place below Jumping
0010
1000
First row is C. C.=1,2,3
Statement 6: Cakes is one place above Running
0100
0010
First row is D. D=1,2,3
Statement 1. Jumping is not adjacent to Running
Jumping is in row C. Running is in row D+1.
C != D,D+2
Statement 4: Sharks is not in the same title as Running
Sharks is in row A+1. Running is in row D+1.
A+1 != D+1
Now look at collisions where two words would occur in same spot to form inequalities.
1st column: B != C+1
2nd column: A+1 != D
3rd column: C != D+1
4th column: A != B+1
Simplify and sort all inequalities by letter
A!= B+1,D-1,D
B!= A-1, C+1
C!= B-1, D,D+1,D+2
D!= A,A+1,C-2,C-1,C
Let A=1
Remove inequalities for A=1
B=1,2,3
C=1,2,3
D=3
Remove inequalities for D=3
B=1,2,3
C=1,2
D=3
Let C=1
Remove inequalities for C=1
B=1,3
C=1
D=3
Let B=1
A=1,B=1,C=1,D=3 is a candidate
Let B=3
A=1,B=3,C=1,D=3 is a candidate
Go back and try C=2
Let C=2
Remove inequalities for C=2
B=1,2
C=2
D=3
Let B=1
A=1,B=1,C=2,D=3 is a candidate
Let B=2
A=1,B=2,C=2,D=3 is a candidate
Let A=2
Remove inequalities for A=2
B=2,3
C=1,2,3
D=1
Remove inequalities for D=1
B=2,3
C=none left
D=1
A=2 is invalid
Let A=3
Remove inequalities for A=3
B=1,3
C=1,2,3
D=1,2
Let D=1
Remove inequalities for D=1
B=1,3
C=none left
D=1
A=3,D=1 is invalid
Let D=2
Remove inequalities for D=2
B=1,3
C=1
D=2
Remove inequalities for C=1
B=1,3
C=1
D=2
Let B=1
A=3,B=1,C=1,D=2 is a candidate
Let B=3
A=3,B=3,C=1,D=2 is a candidate
6 candidates to examine:
A=1,B=1,C=1,D=3
A=1,B=3,C=1,D=3
A=1,B=1,C=2,D=3
A=1,B=2,C=2,D=3
A=3,B=1,C=1,D=2
A=3,B=3,C=1,D=2
Translate each:
A=1,B=1,C=1,D=3
Killing, X, Jumping, Loudly
Making, Sharks, X, Quickly
X, Cakes, X, X
X, X, Running X
2 correct values in first column, thus invalid (B=1,C=1 is invalid)
A=1,B=3,C=1,D=3
X, X, Jumping Loudly
Making, Sharks, X, X
Killing, Cakes, X, X
X, X, Running Quickly
2 correct values in 2nd column , thus invalid (A=1,D=3 is invalid)
A=1,B=1,C=2,D=3
Already shown A=1 D=3 is invalid
A=1,B=2,C=2,D=3
Already shown A=1 D=3 is invalid
A=3,B=1,C=1,D=2
Already shown B=1, C=1 is invalid
A=3,B=3,C=1,D=2
X, X, Jumping X
Making, Cakes, X, X
Killing, X, Running Loudly
X, Sharks, X, Quickly
Attempt to Fill in Xs, while maintaining only 1 correct per column
Shooting, Puddings, Jumping, Cruelly
Making, Cakes, Hopping, Stupidly
Killing, Flies, Running, Loudly
Hitting, Sharks, Laughing, Quickly
Answer:
1st) Shooting Puddings Jumping Cruelly
2nd) Making Cakes Hopping Stupidly
3rd) Killing Flies Running Loudly
4th) Hitting Sharks Laughing Quickly
Cam
Wow Cam ... nice job
Cam has masterfully condensed the answer...;-)
However, the lack of grammatical eloquence in the titles lead me to suspect the authors would be somewhat illiterate.
This would make for some good reading... when can I expect them to appear on Richard and Judys Book Club listings?
I'm very curious to see how others go about solving these style of puzzles. I don't think that the way I approach these is the standard approach (but I could be wrong).
I'm not entirely convinced that this method is the best way to go about these. So, if anyone else has solved this puzzle, I'd encourage them to post their method.
