First Odd Number in an Alphabetical list
Each number from 1 to 10^10 is written out in formal English (e.g. , "two hundred eleven", "one thousand forty-two") and then listed in alphabetical order (as in a dictionary, where spaces and hyphens are ignored).
What's the first odd number in the list?

Well "Billion" comes to mind, but it seems it should have a number first.
What about "a billion"?
Maybe Eight?
Hi Ragknot ... that's a good start
a billion and five.
Alphabetically speaking, there are numbers higher on the list.
Are you using American or European conventions?
A billiard and five.
Rats, a billiard is too big.
One of the examples in the question is "one thousand..." not "a thousand...". So, for consistency shouldn't "a billion" be "one billion"?
Ragknot's "eight" is not odd as required.
I nominate fifteen.
five billion and five.
I'd noticed just before your post appeared.
aaaarghh! You're right (I think).
How about eleven? E comes before F
hmm.. Eighty Five is even better. ;)
Irrespective of the order the first odd number is one
First numericaly, but not alphabeticaly.
The first word in the alphabetical name of a number does not determine whether it even or odd.
Ragknot was on the right track with his first post.
eighteen billion eleven.
Knightmare ... you're on the right track ... start with eight billion and work from there
I think this is the hardest problem that's been posted in ages. I think Knightmare has got the best so far. Two right in one week - yuse bin takin' them thar brane pils Knightmare?
Eighteen billion and eighty five.
I just know that's gonna be wrong ;)
... on the bright side, there aren't that many numbers left to choose.
ok how about
eight billion, eight hundred eighty eight million, eight hundred eighty eight thousand, eight hundred eleven?
no Chris.i don't like those little pills.they make the voices go away and i get lonely.
Knightmare is so close, let's give it to him:
eight billion,eighteen million,eighteen thousand,eight hundered eighty-five
yeah...that's what i meant.
LOL Knightmare. Your replies always make me laugh.
I don't think I can trump your number - you're good at this game.
Good one Zaux. LOL again Knightmare.
Rats!, the few posts got crossed.
Well, I missed "odd" when I answered. But when reading it, I see that the first ODD number was number 10 on my list.
Eight Hundred Thousand Eight Hundred Eighty Five
1 Eight

4 Eight Hundred Thousand Eight
5 Eight Hundred Thousand Eight Hundred
6 Eight Hundred Thousand Eight Hundred Eight
7 Eight Hundred Thousand Eight Hundred Eighteen
8 Eight Hundred Thousand Eight Hundred Eighty
9 Eight Hundred Thousand Eight Hundred Eighty Eight
10 Eight Hundred Thousand Eight Hundred Eighty Five
Eight Billion five.... Oh, My.
I keep finding other suspects.
Eight Billion Eight Hundred Eighty Five
eight billion eight hundred eighty eight thousand eight hundrend eight five
wouldn't it be eighty five?
First Odd Number in Alphabetical list
look at all numbers with unique names i.e. that don't start with a name of another number
numbers above 99 start with 1-10 e.g. one hundred, two thousand, three billion
1-10
one,two,three,four,five,six,seven,eight,nine,ten
11-20
eleven,twelve,thirteen,fourteen,fifteen,sixteen,seventeen,eighteen,nineteen,twenty
30,40,50,60,70,80,90
thirty,forty,fifty,sixty,seventy,eighty,ninety
eight is alphabetically lowest, so we want to use it for our starting digits
we need to now select the odd ending.
candidates:five, eleven
eleven is two digits so compare to eighty five. eighty five is alphabetically lower.
Answer:

Hi Anonymous. I think you're right. But as you can see from above, I could easily be wrong.
