World Record

The current world record in the men's and women's Discus Throw stands at 74.08 and 76.80 metres respectively. All other records in athletics including shot put, javelin and hammer throw is better for males.

So what's happening here ? What's the explanation ?

The discus, the object to be thrown, is a heavy lenticular disc with a diameter of 220 mm (8.66 inches) and a weight of 2 kilograms (4 lb 7 oz) for the men's event, and a diameter of 181 mm (7.17 inches) and a weight of one kg (2 lb 3 oz) for the women's event.

Why are the best discus throwers mostly 30 or over?

Women are better throwers because they have more weight forward of their center of gravity, so they can spin faster.

btw, to Ragknot,
Even in shot put the mens shotput is heavier than womens, dunno about javelin but for Hammer throw also women get lighter stuff.
It is always like that insluding for discuss so tht cannot be the reason.

But, the discus is more aerodynamic, a lighter weight will let it get more lift. The shot put and hammer are equivalent to throwing a toaster, and the javelin is like an arrow. The more weight, more inertia.

The weights used in all 4 events differ according to sex; however men still have greater upper body strength and for events like the hammer throw, shot put and javelin. (I'm just guessing here) But women may be able to get greater distances than men b/c discus involves more technique and balance.
meaning that it does not rely a lot on strength....

It's true the womens discus is lighter, but so are the shotput and hammer. But all the other rely on strength, whereas the discus doesn't. That puts men and women on a more even terms so it could have gone either way.

Shot put requires strength of arm, as well as cyntripital force (sp?) The discus is all about CF, and not so much the strength of the arm. A woman and man both have to spin properly for the discus, and even through the others have spinning involved, like the hammer throw, the basic difference is in the muscle groups that are used in each. The hammer throw uses chest, back and arm muscles to propel the object, but the discuss doesn't need them.

(sorry about the bad spelling...)

the reason is it requires more agility, upper body strength, balance, technique and coordination. it may not seem like it but they all play a very important role in a succesful discus throw. it also requires fitness because its actually been tested that fit people can get less dizzy spinning around than unfit or old people
