Next Number

Solve for the next number in the series:

1 = 7
2 = 16
3 = 27
4 = 40
5 = 55
6 = 72
7= ?

1=7 (1 X 7)
2=16 (2 x 8)
3=27 (3 x 9)
4=40 (4 x 10)
5=55 (5 x 11)
6=72 (6 X 12)
7=91 (7 X13)

Anonymous that is a very good answer but in algebraic terms it is unacceptable the answer should be in terms of the n'th degree so that using an algebraic formula you could find any number no matter how far down the line it is.

In my analysis of the problem I came up with the formula:
X=(n^2)+6n
where X is the number coming out and n is the number going in.

Using the pattern above would require writing every number to solve for n=100 but with my formula you can easily find it

(100^2)+6(100)=10600

i.e. the 100th number in the pattern is 10600.

This also works with all of the given numbers.

(1^2)+6(1)=7
(2^2)+6(2)=16
(3^2)+6(3)=27
(4^2)+6(4)=40
(5^2)+6(5)=55
(6^2)+6(6)=72
(7^2)+6(7)=91

etc. etc......

To Sinisterwolf -

You could just add the next odd number in the sequence to get the answer.

7+9=16, 16+11=27, 27+13=40... all the way down to, 72+19=91 Took me a whole of 5 seconds to solve it that way ;->

Oh BTW, this is a different 'Anonymous'...

Cheers!

Since 1=7,7=1
SO the answer is 1

I add to the above methods to get solution the formula n(n+6)
if n but n=1
1x(1+6)=7
if n but n= 2
2x(2+6)=16 , and so on
if n = 7 then
7 x (7+6) =91

in math its also noted that to answer a question you require the missing information and the information requested. as the Formula IS NOT requested, merely the missing data, said equation is not the answer, merely one of many steps to said answer

For all those people who don't know what the Anon. above said, YOU ONLY NEED TO FILL IN THE BLANK!!! He/she doesn't care how you get the answer.

Ha well the actual answer is:

? = 1

Since at the beginning it was stated that 1 = 7, The only logical and mathematical value for 7 would be 1
