Answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything

42 - The Answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything. We all know (now) that this is from the famous book by Douglas Adam's 'Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy'. This answer was given by supercomputer Deepthought.

Assume that this is correct, can you think of a creative way to justify this answer.

42 !  How ? Why ?

Douglas himself said it's "What do you get when you multiply 6 by 9?" and who am I to question his wisdom?

I would say the supreme answer should be a prime number :)

On first thought, 24 should be the answer. There are many ways to make 24, ie, 1*24, 2*12, 3*8, 4*6 etc.

The problem is 24 is too obvious, thus 42.

Go ask Alice, I'll think she'll know-

Ask her when she's ten feet tall.

To Anon:

As I read the question about 42, I was listening to some old songs, when the singer said "Go Ask Alice.... I'll think she'll know"

Weird, I thought. I am sure if anyone knows, it would be Alice.
Especially when she was ten feet tall!

Anyone know who the singer was?

42 (in base 13)

42 is not what we mere humans think it is.
It is in fact a far more complex answer than it appears on the face of it.
There are many alternate dimensions whose inhabitants have tried to describe the full complexity of 42 without success.
Sorry, I can't help you any more than that.

42 is the number of dimensions that spring fourth from each point at each instance from the universe we know.

You have heard from quantium physics that anything that can happens, actually does happen, but only one thing happens in our universe. At any split second, at each point in our universe, 41 other things happen. A split second later 41 results of the first action occurs that we don't see either.

What we see, depends on the physics of our universe, which is only one of the 42 possible sets of physical laws.

This creates an almost infinite set of universes. They are not parallel as some think, but they do intersect at the point, and time just prior to any action that is about to take place.

If we could see the 42 directions, and understood the physics of each, we could predict the outcome of any action, giving us the power of a god.

The deep thought computer had derived enough of this knowledge to give us the number 42 as the answer we need to understand ... The Answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything.

I mean it could be any number. And give a proper reason please.

Our galaxy weighs three times 10 to the power of 42kg - a number written as 3 followed by 42 zeroes, which has echoes of author Douglas Adams's fictional answer to the question of life, the universe and everything in his series Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Let's not assume that '42' is the correct Answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything. It in fact IS!

This is because the answer '42' is arbitary. If we take this to mean simply a point of data and the ONLY point of data, then '42' becomes synonymous with Absolute Truth.

The computer could have spat out any single representation (1, blue, cat puke), any one would do to represent Absolute Truth.

Can anyone argue that Truth is not the answer to everything? Even in a universe where 1=0?

42, the magic a mystic answer to all that is a every will be.

Well it all has to do with prime numbers and the way the question is asked. Prime numbers are the raw materials in mathematics.

42 is one of two natural sphenic numbers meaning it can be reduced to 3 prime numbers, 2,3, and 7. The other is 30 with 2,3, and 5.
2+3+7=12 1+2=3
thus the raw components of 42 cane be simplified neurologically in to 3.
*The three dimensions of Space being Width, height and length -The universe.
*The three components to Time being past, present and future -Life
*The three forms of Matter being gas, liquid and solid.

Also because It's the number God used to make the universe. see Kabala. End of Mayan Calendar 12 21 2012 11:11= 4:2

had fun this this!

6 times 9
...
...
...
who else realized that that is 54 and that 54 is in no way, ever, possibly, even in the 7th demension going to be 42

As an Anonymous said previously, 6x9 is in fact 42 if you multiply in base 13 instead of base 10. While Douglas Adams claims not to have written the joke with base 13 in mind, neither did Arthur Dent pull out random letters from a scrabble set with the Question in mind. Thus Adams' intent is irrelevant, and the result is that Life, the Universe, and Everything is defined in base 13.
