The Printing Press Problem

The printing-presses use large amounts of black ink, which is delivered by tanker and pumped into a horizontal storage tank. This tank has vertical ends and an elliptical cross section, It is known to be able to hold 5000 units of ink plus some extra space to contain a reasonable amount of overfill/expansion.

The longer axis of the ellipse is horizontal and the shorter is vertical, so it is similar cross section to many road tankers. Replacement ink is ordered on a weekly contract, enough ink being ordered to bring the level back up to within 500 units of the nominal full capacity.

The amount of ink remaining in the tank is measured with a dip-stick. However the original, calibrated, dipstick has vanished. The problem then is that there is now no way of accurately knowing how much ink is in the tank, and hence how much to order. A new dipstick is needed, but the original manufacturer has gone out of business.

How can a new and accurately dipstick calibrated be created?

One way of doing it is to keep track of how many papers you can print with a full tank until you need to refill. If you need to order a new tank with out a dipstick, estimate how much ink is left judging by how many papers were printed with that tank.

A diagram of the tank would be nice. But I am guessing put the stick in straight down to begin with.. Then remove the stick and note the mark then put the stick in one more time this time at a 45 deg. angle noting the depth do some funny math to conclude the side depth and presto..

Measure the total length from inside bottom to full. Mark a dipstick with full point and empty marks at top and bottom. Mark the mid point at half full (or 2500 units). When the tank is half full by the marked dip stick, begin refilling tank. Mark dipstick at each 100 units added. Duplicate the half to full marks as half to empty marks on the bottom half of dipstick.

probablh not the best plan but deffinantly the easiest...

wait till you run out then call up the complany and order a little less than 5000 units of ink
and when they pump it in have them pump only 4500 in then mark the 'MINIMUM' on the new dipstick
then fill it up the rest of the way...
and tehre yiu go!
