alberto ayala says:

It can be 1/2, because last 2 numbers are previous one divided by 2

I am guessing the next number is 3. Here is the pattern that I see...it may be too easy to be right, but it works.

1,2,3,2,1
2,3,4,2,1
3,4,5,2,1

I think the sqeuence is to insert a two at the end of an increasing string

123 followed by a 2
then
1234 followed by another 2
begining with another string, it begins with
1.......
you would add, 2345

the answer is 2 because the roman numeral 11 is 2 digits long. (XI)

its all roman numerals, eg the roman numeral for 1 is I so its 1 digit long, the numeral for 2 is II so 2 digits long, 5 being V so 1, 10 also being 1, and then 11 being XI is 2 digits long, so the anser is 2.

I think matt got it right..
the only thing that make sense here it that after the 1,2,3 follows 2 and 1 then 2,3,4 followed one again with 2 and 1

1,2,3 2,1
2,3,4 2,1

so its 3,4,5 then 2 and 1

nice algorithm...

if this is the case:

123 2
1234 2
12345 2

then it should begin with

1 2
12 2

123 2
1234 2
12345 2

to complete the cycle...

if this answer is correct then the question wrong..

Quintonia is correct. The '4' is 8 which is written llX , or 3 digits. if numerals are the answer, then the question itself is incorrect. however this only applies to the moderated system, and in the classical re presentation of ordinal numbers, Otto, or 8, was Wither VIII 11= Xi or in this pattern 2. the pattern would go 123212342123432 3453234... For reference go to http://www.legionxxiv.org/numerals/
