TomWebUser's Allowance
Tom was given his allowance last week, which is meant to last him all week. On Monday, he spent a quarter of his money on gambling. On Tuesday, he spent one third of the remaining money on games. On Wednesday he spent half of his remaining money on paying his bookie. Finally on Thursday he spent my last $1.25 on an adult magazine. How much allowance did he receive?

i think $30 because after u backtrack u do the sums again and see if it workes. and i did it again and it was 1.243... so 30 is the answer
1/4x+1/3x+1/2x=1.25
1.25*2=2.50
2.50*3=7.50
7.50*4= 30
$30.oo
i think it's a word play question. i think that you would do the same math, but than you subtract 1.25 because it says that he spent someone elses money. so my theory is that he payed 28.75
you dont know how much he recives as u only get iven a figure for someone elses money
algebraically, the answer could be $25, or 25+20x, so it could be $45,$65, $85,...
So the answer is $25
Why is a kid buying all this crap? I mean it says he gets an allowance.
Dont trust "WebUser" on this one (tricky in many aspects):
1) ""He spent "my" last $1.25."" So we don't know how much Tom has got left in his pocket.
2) It didn't say, Tom is my son, brother, or friend. By definition, "allowance" is usually given to children. But, riddle didn't say "I am his parent."
3) By imagination, if someone spent someone else' money, then that person is either a thief, or Tom borrowed money from me (not "parent-son" relationship). Or, Tom works in IRS or other gov. (Hee hee)
4) Since Tom can gamble on Mon, he must be 21yr or older.
5) Since Tom can buy Adult magazine on Thur, he must be 18yr or older.
6) Assume both (4) and (5) were legal, then Tom is not a kid.
7) So, let's assume: Tom is an adult and was given allowance by a Rich Uncle, who only has a dollar and a quarter in his (her) pocket.
8) We don't know either: where did Tom gamble, and from whom Tom bought the Adult magazine?
9) Therefore, The answer is:
A. Either original riddle needs to be reworded,
B. Or, there are multiple answers. Many possible amounts.
C. The only clue: bookie would not cost hundreds of dollars. Hence, there are only hundreds or thousands of answers, not 10k, nor millions.

To Shark: Dude, ur like House or Grisolm on CSI... thinking out of the box...its a good thing
i typed up the riddle... if one reads the first post, i made a correction.
the answers $5... the items are irrelevant. its just a red herring... but i like the way you guys think...
snaps to cybersurf for being the first correct answer.
who spends only 1.25 on gambling?
It's $5
It's $5
It's $5
Tom had $5.00, and spent $1.25, on each of the 4 days
$5... (I've been out for a few days)..
Not enough!!
To: "Rx"
1) Thanks for quick answer. However, the rule said "Provide answer aft 1 wk."
2) You forgot to sign "Rx" at the end of original riddle.
3) At 1st post, you forgot to mention: u r original writer. Readers thought: A diff "Rx" tried to correct "WebUser".
4) For those who provided almost-perfect math equations, here r the more accurate formula, pls?
[[(Y - 1/4Y) - [(Y - 1/4Y) x 1/3] ]] x 1/2 = $1.25
=> [[ 3/4Y - 3/4Y x 1/3 ]] x 0.5 = $1.25
=> 3/4Y - 1/4Y = $2.50
=> 2/4Y = $2.50
=> Y = $2.50 x 2 = $5.00
5) Back to "Rx":
a. Pls ask Tom not to gamble $1.25. Should gamble on even numbers. (Hard to split a penny, when he loses half of the Ante.)
b. Pls tell Tom: Spending $1.25 for Adult Mag is too much. He can get them free on Internet.
c. Pls advise Tom: Next week he should spend all $5 on bookies. (So cheap. Therefore Tom can turn around and resell 4 bookies for $2 each. Hence he can gamble $8 in following week.)
You know I'm joking... :-,) Shark
