Unless the guy really did wirte the riddle wrong and its actually a coffin, I think it's the lens of a pair of glasses. you can't really see It, you se through it. and an eye doctor doesn't make his own glasses, but uses a similar one made by another.

I've heard this one in school before, but kind of different, just barely.
Its not oxygen as plants still use Cellular Respiration to make energy. Cellular Respiration needs oxygen and glucose(sugar). Since plants cannot move, they create glucose through photosynthesis. They still use energy just not many people realize it. And the answer is coffin
