What is it ?
I could not resist. It was just sitting there in the store, silent, waiting. Every day I would stop and look at it, with the freakish fascination of bystanders at the scene of an accident.
It kept calling to me. I kept coming back to it.
A friend was wondering what was wrong with me. "Why do you look at that? You don't even like it!". How could I explain to him the indifferent compulsion that drew me again and again? How could I explain that words such as "like" became meaningless, hollow noise when compared to the universe of my fascination?
And then one day, I bought it: ?

i'm guessing a broken mirror?
it has to be a book
it's Death
The statements are to vague to even attempt a guess could be a million things. was he in a bookstore, a candle shop or perhaps an adult novelty shop. the riddle gives no clues as to what this this may be abstract or not. I could post a simular vague "What is it" does not make it a trick of mind. Post an answer then well debate it.Sheeeshhhh
The answer ofcourse can be a million of things but i think the point of the author (IMHO) is what can be so precious for which you can react like that.
My 2 cents
I think it is a television on mute, on a different channel everyday
a Hummer?
A hummer doesn't sit there in a store.
Why don't people send in real puzzles?
how do we get the answers?
His friend believes that the person does not even "like" the object...but in the passage the word "like" is meangingless to him in comparision to his fascination...that of bystanders at the scene of an accident. So what does a person feel at this time: revulsion, desire to help, pain, sorrow, helplessness, sickened, curiousity, adrenaline, etc. There is no cap to the feelings people could feel at the scence...therefore there should be no cap to the emotions that the person had for his object...what could possibly give anyone this feelings all at once
Wisdom/Knowledge
That is what the person bought at the store. With wisdom comes understanding which creates room for new emotions to every situation that life can offer

it is a cell phone. " it kept calling me" is the clue.
it's a comic book that is suposed to be funny, but isn't.
Rajesh Lal: i think it would be a good idea if the answers to these riddles were posted after a certain length of time, say a week or two. It would be nice if we could find out if we were right or not.
here are a few more things it could be:
a goya painting. a tarantula in a terrarium. ludwig wittgenstein's tractus logico-philosophicus. a dwarf porn magazine. A PUZZLE WITH NO SOLUTION!
mo,
thanks for your suggestion.
I do plan to answer all the older questions once in two weeks but sometimes get tied up in work.
maybe it was the cash in the cash register.
He DID buy himself notoriety

It's his "Precious"!
I think it's a seriously hard or impossible puzzle. You know, when you see a 12-sided rubik's cube for the first time and your fascinated by it but can't figure it out. He's frustrated by it but can't put it down.
Maybe I'm just weird, but that's how I feel all the time.
my guess, one of these:
-a mirror
-an abstract painting
-stereogram
-my ex boyfriend's portrait painting
or his blown up picture or his
poster/ billboard- damn it!!!! lol

ANSWER
---------------------------
Well it was an expensive comic book which was not funny.
"The Best of Ernie Bushmiller's Nancy (1988) by Brian Walker "
but ofcourse anything can be possible, this question was more like what can cause such feelings, attraction, fascination and repulsion at the same time.
GOT RIGHT - mo and others
---------------------------
I wonder how mo can guess it right.
he was quite exact in his comment
" it's a comic book that is suposed to be funny, but isn't. "
