Wrong Time

At 16 minutes past 2, one afternoon a man, unaware of time checks his digital clock, it shows 2:17.

Its incorrect ! he knew, How ?

It's been off by one minute every day for the past eight years. It's actually one of those fancy watches that synchs up via satellite to an atomic clock that he received from his wife for their sixteenth anniversary, but he had it initially recalibrated to display one minute ahead as a means to psychologically trick himself into being more punctual...unfortunately after eight years of looking at the watch, he's so accustomed to the sight of the time progressed by one minute that he doesn't even think about it; when he sees 2:17, what registers upstairs is "Ah, it's 2:16."
So much for punctuality, Phil.

a digital clock usually in army time, so if it showed 2:17 then he knew it was wrong because it was afternoon

ITS SHOWING 2.17AM NOT 2.17PM IF THE TIME IS SHOWN IN A 12-HOURS FORMAT. OR IF THE TIME IS SHOWN IN A 24-HOURS FORMAT, THE CORRECT TIME SHOWN WOULD BE 1517. 1 MINUTE WONT MAKE MUCH DIFFERENT IN THIS QUESTION.

there's only one problem with the top guys idea... if he's smart, wouldn't he set it ahead one minute every time he became accustomed to it? If so, by the end of eight years, he'd have it set more than 1 minute, unless he's like, really slow

If he knew the clock ran on military time, then it would be easy just by considering the general time of day. However, in my experience, most digital clocks (or devices with a digital time readout) default to AM/PM, with a military option.
I dunno. Maybe this guy's in the Navy?

It was one of those digital flip clocks, where every minute the minute # flips around.

He knows that the power has gone out and has been out for hours, if not days.

its another of these 'the answer can be whatever you want it to be' again. the answer (as an example) could be that the person had looked at their watch a few seconds before and so knew already. Or another example could be theres a clock somewhere next to them that they are looking at aswell. That's just an example of two answers so you see how many answers there could be? its a pointless question... it has so many answers. The only accepted answer will be the one that the question maker posts... which seems odd to me.

I was thinking the 24 hour "army time" as well. 2:17 in army time in AM, so it would actually be 14:16 in "army time".

well all the people thinking it is 24 hour time are incorrect as it shows it as 1500hrs rather than 15:00 the simple answer is that the format on his watch is as follows hrs:min:sec or 02:17:00 and it had stopped therefore he knew that the time was wrong.

His clock had been broken for a few days now, and when it broke, it got stuck at 2:17.

I agree that the watch must be set to the 24h clock. If it wasnt then it would show either 2.17 am OR 2.17PM but never just 2.17.

I believe this is the answer the question islooking for.

If you said he knew the watch is broken then you ARE WRONG! If it was broken and showed a generic 2.17 on the screen, twice a day the watch would be correct. If his watch was broken he would have no way to tell if the watch was right or wrong, as it could by chance be correct at the time he looks at it.

Since he knew it was wrong, it cannot be because the watch is broken.

Because a digital watch always rounds up, the time would appear as 2:16:?? (some number) on an analog clock but 2:17 on a digital one

because it stopped working at 2:17 and never was reset.....he looked at his sweet ass vista gadget withe the big clock and saw the true time so he could reset it.....if it had come unplugged, the clock would usually flash 12:00 conssitently until fixed....no one said it worked

yall come up with some wacked ideals its simple common sense, he has no reference of time but he knows that it is afternoon and the clock says it is 2:17 but it didnt state wheter or not it was AM or PM thus the clock must have read 2:17 AM and for those who are stumped by this shouldnt bother doing any more of these.

It's simple!
He has one of those fancy watches that say both analogue and digital time. he checks and one clock tells him it is 2:17 the other tells him it is 16minutes past 2. How can he tell it is the day? Well unless he is a vampire he will have sunlight comming through his window(unless he is outside ofc)

he knew the time simply because he is able to compare the time with sombody else's or perhaps he is listening over to a radio when in time that he looked over to his watch there is a time lag between hi and the djay...

IVE GOT IT !

Listen carefully, it said it just showed 2:17 which means it wud have to be 24 hour because it dosent tell u if its am or pm. If it wasnt 24hr it wud say 2:17am or 2:17pm so its 24hr. And so then it also says that afternoon which means he didnt no the time was wrong by 1 minute it just knew it was wrong because the watch was claiming its 2:17 in the morning when its actually the afternoon.

Finally i got 1 right.

ANSWER
--------------------
It was a 24 hour clock. In the afternoon he was expecting something like 14:xx, and so he knew that the watch is showing the wrong time.

This question can be answered with any out of the box reasonable answer.

GOT RIGHT
